Nut and Acorn Weevil - Curculio proboscideus - male - female

Nut and Acorn Weevil - Curculio proboscideus - Male Female
Spiderweb, Aiken County, South Carolina, USA
September 28, 2011
Came to light.

Large Chestnut Weevil (Curculio proboscideus) based on other BG images.

ID confirmed by J.C. Ciegler
her comment: "Yes, I agree they're C. proboscideus. Females of three SC species have rostra longer than the body: C. proboscideus, C. nasicus, & C. caryae. The rostrum of C. nasicus is more curved, so I eliminated that. The rostrum of C. caryae is twice as wide at the base as it is in the middle, but that of C. proboscideus is nearly the same width throughout, so I'm opting for the latter."

Moved from Nut and Acorn Weevils.

good call, as always; i'll ask Jan to take a look
