Small grasshopper - Conozoa sulcifrons - male

Small grasshopper - Conozoa sulcifrons - Male
Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California, USA
September 26, 2011
These small hoppers (not measured; perhaps 1.5 cm) were abundant on the ground and low surfaces in the Valley.

Conozoa sulcifrons seems the best fit
Moved from Conozoa.

A couple of choices come to mind, very different, but
can look similar in photos. It could be a California Rose-winged Grasshopper - Dissosteira pictipennis, the big abdomen certainly looks right, but at this angle the crest on the top of the pronotum (saddle over the thorax) looks too low for Dissosteira, and there seems to be a bit of a bump on the lower rear edge of the pronotum, which brings me to Conozoa, which is what he probably is, perhaps C. sulcifrons. Did you notice the wing color? the first should have a fairly rich pink to red wing and the Conozoa pale yellow to almost colorless. May have been a dark band across the wings, but it's usually hard to see when they fly.

Wing color
"Pale yellow to almost colorless" is much more likely. These grasshoppers looked drab. I would have noticed any vivid pink or red.
