Blue beetle - Chrysochus cobaltinus

Blue beetle - Chrysochus cobaltinus
Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California, USA
September 27, 2011
Size: 9.6 mm bl
Numerous solitary individuals and at least three mating pairs of these beautiful beetles were on two small patches of milkweed directly across a boardwalk from each other within an area of some 9 square meters (100 sq. ft.), Leidig Meadow (elev. 3880 ft., 1183 m), late afternoon. All were shades of blue, ranging from greenish through purplish. Some specimens had head and pronotum in a different shade from abdomen. I saw no similar aggregations of beetles on other stands of milkweed, at most one or two specimens in any location.
