Red Spider - Neoscona crucifera

Red Spider - Neoscona crucifera
Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, USA
October 2, 2011
Size: 3/4 inch
This beautiful spider was on my son's basketball backboard this morning. He was trying to hide but eventually put on a great show moving all around. What kind of spider is it?

Moved
Moved from ID Request. She may have actually been tearing the web apart. These spiders often build their web each evening and the tear them up at dawn.

Perfectly harmless and beneficial orb weaver
looks to be Neoscona crucifera
