Montana, USA
December 31, 1969
Size: approx quarter w legs out
This spider has maintained the same shape for about a month. Pic taken 9/8/11. Have no idea if its carrying babies. Would like to know if I need to move it to neighbors house or yard due to babies. I usually spray my yard and house for insects and spiders but this guy is above the front door, he catches mostly bees and flys in his web. Very active at night, curled up in shadow during day. I stuck a grass hopper in web and he had it spun and pulled into shade with in a hour. I've completly pulled his web apart twice with a broom in the early evening and by morning it's rebuilt.

This is a female and it will create an egg sac. The spiderlings will emerge next year. Of that group a few will make it to maturity. These spiders are beneficial (not dangerous) and will be great free pest control.

I was just reading about poisons sprayed and the article says that poison remains in the dirt for 15 years. I'd much rather have spiders & bugs than poisons in my yard.

Harmless Orb Weaver...
Possibly the Cat-Faced Spider. Harmless and beneficial. It's likely a female, but it's uncertain whether or not she is ready to lay eggs. Insecticides are pretty much useless against spiders of all species, and are potentially much more harmful to you and your pets than any spider, even a Black Widow.
