This little creature scuttled quickly across the trail in front of me. When I got down to take his picture, he stopped and obligingly posed for several. I took some profile shots to try and show his mantis-like front legs, but for some reason the front legs didn't show very well. This photo from above was the better one.

Ground mantis
Looks like a nymph of a ground mantis, Litaneutria minor. Females are wingless even as adults, but usually show wing pads.

 
Looks like sticks to me
