wasp - female

wasp - Female
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
October 4, 2011
This tiny wasp spent quite a long time going from aphid to aphid and making a quick poking motion with her abdomen, apparently depositing her eggs into each aphid. Aphids and wasp were on a milkweed pod and stem.

Aphidiinae…
Great set of live action shots. As you can see, females like this one have a short ovipositor. Adults will emerge about 13 days after oviposition.

See reference here.

aphids and wasp
I checked the aphids on the milkweed because the day before I had found some aphids on the underside of one of the leaves showing that a few of them had already been parasitized . So, as you can imagine, I was happy to have found this wasp in the act of parasitizing more aphids.

Nice...
These wasps are so small, and they oviposit so quickly, that is indeed rare to capture these moments happening in real time. Thanks for all your patience and efforts here.
