Canthon pilularius

Canthon pilularius
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
September 9, 2003
Size: 18 mm
This is a detail of the head and, especially, eye, of an individual already posted. According to the key in Harpootlian (1) and figs. 13-14 of that reference, the larger eye here shows this to be Canthon vigilans, differentiating it from C. pilularis (=C. laevis). Length of this specimen was circa 18-19 mm. Anybody with better information, please correct me if I am wrong!

ID updated 3/13/24--see comments. Eyes are not large, as in vigilans:

Moved from chalcites or pilularius.
In correspondence, Dave Edmonds says "(image) 4043 could be either chalcites or pilularius, definitely not vigilans (eyes are too small). But Photo#5850 of this same individual proves it to be pilularius (obvious granulation on prontum, which chalcites lacks). "
