Mite infesting Drosophilia, dorsal - Tyrophagus

Mite infesting Drosophilia, dorsal - Tyrophagus
Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA
Size: 0.47 mm
Download high resolution image here.

This tiny mite was one many infesting Drosophilia flies with agar food mix in April of 2011 in a biological laboratory in Detroit Michigan. Its identification is based on similarity in appearance and environment of other posted mites,

It was given an HMDS treatment(1) to minimize deformation during drying. The treatment may have been imperfect, though, as it appears a bit shrivelled.

This view is a CombineZP processed stack of 370 images with a 0.9 micron step taken with a Nikon BD 20X 0.40NA microscope objective + adapter/extension tube + Nikon D300 camera.
