long-legged beetle - Cephaloon lepturides

long-legged beetle - Cephaloon lepturides
Stow, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 3, 2006
Size: ~8mm
I collected this to take home and photograph, but when I got home, it had expired. With it's long legs, I couldn't get it to stay right side up for a picture.

Don, thanks for yet another species id!

Cephaloon lepturides
The darker form of this species, which is quite variable in color pattern.

Cephalonidae
Maybe a Cephaloon species?

Unless I erred, this term does not google.
Is it spelled differently?

Cephaloidae
Oops, sorry. Try Cephaloidae. I think the genus is Cephaloon.

Ah, Stenotrachelidae is the new designation
according to American Beetles, vol. 2, page 520 There are 10 spp. in four genera in the bugguide area. The drawing of Cephaloon tenuicorne on page 520 looks a lot like Tom's beetle.

Tom, it looks kike you've added another new beetle family to bugguide :-)

Thanks Frank and Jim
When I first saw this beetle in the grass, I thought it was a beetle, but wasn't sure that it wasn't a fly until I got a good look. I'll see if I can prop up the beetle to get a decent dorsal shot.
