Casebearer on shingle oak - Acrobasis

Casebearer on shingle oak - Acrobasis
Louisa County, Iowa, USA
October 9, 2011
Size: case 15mm if outstretched
These casebearers were abundant on shingle oaks, but I didn't spot them on other types of oak. The cases shown here were pretty typical -- tapering, with one or two distinct twists or turns, like a cornucopia. Many larvae had half-rolled a leaf edge where they were feeding, secured it with lots of silk, and then hidden (within their case) inside this retreat.
