Antelope Beetle - Dorcus parallelus - female

Antelope Beetle - Dorcus parallelus - Female
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
June 18, 2006
Size: 20 mm sans mandibles
It seems like only a month or two ago I was complaining to Matthew Roth that I had never even seen a Dorcus parallelus and, by golly, he delivered the message! This female came to my UV lights last night, a fantastic hot, humid night for bugs. I think more beetle families visited my moth sheet than at any time in the past, including in Ecuador. This beetle might have fit into the mouth of the plastic bottle I was using for collecting but I didn't want to risk it. I just held her loosely inside my closed hand and let her pinch me periodically till I decided to go into the house.
