Syrphid Fly Lake Archusa, MS - Helophilus fasciatus

Syrphid Fly Lake Archusa, MS - Helophilus fasciatus
Lake Archusa, Clarke County, Mississippi, USA
October 16, 2011
Size: 12 mm
Syrphid flies were observed hovering about water and depositing small white eggs upon vegetation. The flies seemed to be territorial as when one fly would be at rest and another would approach they would engage in what appeared to be combat, if not mating. I was able to observe and video a female egg laying upon a pine tree twig. You can actually see one of the eggs in the upper right corner of this photograph which shows one of these flies resting upon a leaf that was floating upon the water's surface. These may be Parhelophilus sp. Does anyone want to take a guess at the species?

Helophilus
I had a similar experience on 10/13/11...I didn't see the eggs deposited but the group of them buzzed about a small artificial pond and only one landed at a time on floating leaves...Helophilus seems to be a very good bet..It is where I have gotten with my fly's ID so far.

not an expert
but it looks a lot like Helophilus fasciatus to me
