Ms A's Nest Dissected - Araneus andrewsi

Ms A's Nest Dissected - Araneus andrewsi
San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California, USA
October 16, 2011
I waited for months, a little over two, to see if something could emerge from the nest she once guarded. I finally removed it from the flower pot drain and peeled away the curly web only to find this hard corn flake like egg mass. I believe we have our answer to the spousal question. Ms. A apparently expired childless.

Hi Rob
Any chance you can find us a male of this species this coming summer?

The Summer
Well, I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled. I've kept Ms A's eggs in a little jar with a nylon stocking lid, but I'm afraid their sterility is confirmed. In my yard the most successful spider seems to be Cyclosa turbinata. It has persisted longer and in higher numbers than any other. In the park nearby Argiope argenata persisted although in diminishing numbers into the winter. Now spiders are pretty thin in the neighborhood with only a few Cyclosas and the resident Funnel Web Weavers in the Lantana. Thanks for the sustained interest.

You might want to keep that egg sac in a container and make sure nothing happens in the spring? This is such a great series... very nice.
