Gypsy moth caterpillar - Lymantria dispar

Gypsy moth caterpillar - Lymantria dispar
Kingston, Ontario, Canada
June 20, 2006
Size: 1600x1200
No leads as to what species this caterpillar is? It is in it's early instar (2nd or 3rd). The hairy black thing at it's posterior end is a head capsule I believe, indicating a transition from one instar to another. I'm feeding it on maple leaves.

Thanks guys !
Thanks for the comments all! Yeah, the caterpillar is definately a Gypsy moth as it has developed it's distinctive markings. Cheers!

Not that it makes much difference, but..
If you intend to raise this caterpillar it's probably just as well not to release it.

This is the caterpillar
of the non-native invasive Gypsy Moth! Do a search and find many images in the guide for comparison.
