Hickory Borer -- October 2011, Lubbock, TX - Megacyllene caryae

Hickory Borer -- October 2011, Lubbock, TX - Megacyllene caryae
Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas, USA
October 16, 2011
Size: 3/4 inch
One of two specimens captured this week. Identity confirmed by Mike Quinn, Texas State Entomologist. Puzzling though that these specimens appeared at this time of year, when the Hickory Borer is supposedly active in the Spring. May be that these were females searching for egg-laying sites (I do have a huge Pecan tree in the backyard near where the specimens were located).
