Beautiful Spider - Araneus guttulatus

Beautiful Spider - Araneus guttulatus
Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas, USA
August 13, 2009
This was on the side of a car in the parking lot at my office. So, don't know if it originated there or elsewhere. Beautiful coloration. Olathe is on the west side of the Kansas City region.

Moved from Araneus guttulatus. I think it's fair to move this here for now. Thanks for contacting the spider expert in KS. We'll think about those comments.

One thing about A. guttulatus that doesn't match this spider... is that the description says carapace yellow... and this specimen certainly looks green. However, pattern looks pretty odd for A. cingulatus.

Thanks Lynette
Such beautiful spiders...too bad they hide their true identities out of range of the general photographer! :-)

Moved from ID Request. Wow, nice find.

Great find - we're envious!
Looks to be Araneus guttulatus

Spider ID
I sent my photo to a spider expert in Kansas, Bruce Cutler, and he suggested the following:

"Neat spider image the small Araneus are an interesting group. Many are high arboreal and are most easily collected from mud dauber nests. We have about 8 spp. in KS. Really need genitalia for identification, but the lack of black pigment on the abdomen makes me think it is Araneus cingulatus.”

It is fun to think about mud daubers being a great tool to find elusive spiders!

Wow
Wasn't expecting that quick of a turn around on ID! A new data point for Kansas! Thanks!
