TN_Diptera-sp1 - Toxomerus politus
Shelby Forest, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA
July 15, 2011
Size: 13mm length-approx
In the garden during the day here in the hardwood forest, sw TN, I was photographing a moth atop my camera case when this fly came and checked out the moth. They seem to be attracted to dead things (as far as I can tell from past observations of similar looking flies), but this moth was alive, so it left after a few seconds' rest.

Syrphid
Looks as if it could be a very lightly marked Toxomerus politus:

But wait for confirmation/correction from the fly experts.

Thanks Ken
for the "Polite" ID! Note in my photo the two points at the end of the abdomen (perhaps of significance?)
