Eristalis? - Eristalis hirta - male

Eristalis? - Eristalis hirta - Male
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
October 16, 2011
Several of these syrphids were nectaring on Baccharis pilularis (Coyote Bush) at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. They do not appear to be a species I've photographed before. I am wondering if they could be Eristalis?

Note: These images were originally linked to two photos of a different Eristalis, which I mistakenly thought was the same individual as these photos. They have now been separated, but some of the comments refer to the original posting.

Eristalis hirta
This fly which is Eristalis hirta was posted with two other images which were Eristalis stipator. One way to confuse everybody.

Sorted out now, I think!
Bill, I am very sorry for the confusion! The photos I originally posted were taken just a few seconds apart on the same shrub, and I mistakenly thought they were the same individual.

After you posted your very helpful comments, I reviewed the original photo sequence, and I agree that the photos are of different individuals. I've unlinked the other two photos that were originally posted with this one and added a new photo, which I am certain is of this individual.

Jim Hogue still thinks
this is probably E. hirta. Of course, it would be good to see more, but this is often the problem with ID from photos. I'm sure we can get a specimen some time soon.

Eritalis hirta
I incorrectly thought this might be Eristalis arbustorum.
Even though you can`t see the face and determining stripe, with such clear markings on tergite 2, you would expect them to reach the hind margin broadly if it were Eristalis arbustorum, especially a male.
This is Eristalis hirta.

I checked with Jim Hogue, E. hirtus seems correct, though E. arbustorum is very similar, this fly doesn't have enough hair in the face.

Thanks, Hartmut!
Thanks, Hartmut! E. hirta (or hirtus) is new species for the field station invert list.

Any chance you tell anything about this somewhat similar syrphid?

Thanks!
Thanks so much for confirming the identity! We've had Eristalis on our field station invert list, but we didn't previously have any photos.

Male
I forgot to mention that this one is a male. I am sure that somebody will be able to narrow it down to species.
I am also sure that you will find more if you keep looking. They are fairly common.

Thanks, again!
I've edited the post to show that this one is a male. I will definitely keep looking! We only started documenting inverts two years ago, so we still have lots to add to our list and photos.
