chrysalis - Nymphalis antiopa

chrysalis - Nymphalis antiopa
Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 20, 2006
Size: 1"
A full-size image is available here.

Nympahlis antiopa
I've looked at this over and over, and it is bothersome. First one inch isn't very big, and would imply a largish Nymphalis milberti (it is definitely a Nymphalis pupa); however, it doesn't look like that species in many minor details. It matches N. antiopa in every detail of structure and coloration, except that the spines should be longer, and it would be rather small at one inch. The only other posibility - Nymphalis (Roddia) vau-album - is equally large, and has silvered spots and usually a different pattern (less speckled for one thing), but is otherwise very similar. I can only conclude that this is just a Mourning Cloak pupa with the spines shorter than usual.

Moved from Butterflies.

I'm glad you think it's a Mourning Cloak, because the circumstantial evidence pointed *strongly* in that direction. See this other photo, taken three days earlier, only about 20 feet away in essentially the same habitat:
