P.clarus record for WA - Phidippus clarus

P.clarus record for WA - Phidippus clarus
Prosser, Benton County, Washington, USA
June 20, 2006
Size: 10-12mm
Here's a P.clarus photo from WA State. A very common spider in the cut-flower garden this time of year. We also have lots of P. audax as well, but they stay more on the man-made structures, while clarus seems to like the cover provided by the plants.

This is an immature specimen, with a molt or two to go until adulthood. I've noticed that when several Phidippus species co-exist in the same locale, they seem to stagger both their microhabitat AND their life cycles, so that adults of either species are rarely found together at the same time of year. I guess salticid courtship is dangerous enough as is without trying it w/an unsuitable partner!
