Fearsome Fanged Weevil -
Cyrtepistomus castaneus
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
October 22, 2011
Size: 5.5mm
Ventral view. 3.5 days later and it still has the "fangs", but maybe that's because it would lose them while eating, and I don't know what to give it to eat.

Have you tried different plant materials?
Fruit, seeds, nuts, . . .
Outdoors, I sometimes find weevils (not this species) on raspberries.

Thanks
for the suggestions - since it's an oak weevil, I'm assuming it eats something oak-y? Perhaps I'll just collect some oak-y things to offer it - leaf, acorn, branch?

I don't know
Bugs are often named after what the larvae eat; an adult's diet may be different. Trying oak parts wouldn't hurt. If I had to chew into an acorn, I'd put those fangs to good use. But the safest course is to give it a smorgasbord.

I forgot to mention water
It should also have a moist cotton ball to drink from. No open water. Bugs can drown in a smal quantity.
As food items, you might try unsalted sunflower seeds or anything similar, rose hips, and large garden seeds if they're around.

Oh that's right -
thanks for the reminder. I've been giving it the tiniest little drips of water.
