A unicolor Csiki
I am currently at U of A curating the collection and cannot find Margarethe's specimens
HELP please

In addition to the usual collection data
my specimen has a green label 'BG 589682' that refers to the BugGuide entry here. The beetles were collected in the National Park during a Bioblitz. Maybe they are stored apart?

Anchonoderus sp. --det. D.R. Maddison
YAAAY! new genus for the Guide! thanks, Margarethe

Moved from Ground Beetles.

I have difficulty reconciling these images
with my perception of genus Anchonoderus which supposedly has an elongated ant-like habitus and has dorsum densely and uniformly punctate with setae. Please help me to understand.

Our southwestern Anchonoderus are three:
A. quadrinotatus Horn - known TX - see MCZ images above; elongated pronotum; most setose; dark elytra w 4 pale macules; ABL ~ 7 mm.

A. schaefferi Liebke (syn. A. unicolor Schaeffer) - known AZ, TX - elytra broader & pronotum shorter; dorsal setae shorter/sparser; elytra uniformly black w/o macules; ABL ~ 7 mm.

A. horni Ciski (syn. A. apicalis Horn) - known Baja MX - habitus like A. schaefferi but elytra fusco-testaceous w apices irregularly darker (piceous); ABL ~ 7 mm.

Among the three, the current images of course favor A. horni which means one must now consider the possibility of a new US record.

Anchonoderus
I just compared the image from Madrona Ranger Station with Schaeffer's "A. unicolor" (i.e., A. shaefferi Liebke) holotype from Texas. They do not match. I agree with Peter, this is most likely A. horni Csiki (syn. A. apicalis G. Horn).

thanks, Terry
glad to see you join

This new Arizona & new USA record
is added to the post-2012 caraboid registry. Terry, I'm thrilled that you've joined BugGuide and posted your first opinion on this particular great find.

thank you everybody!

I have given the two specimens
to our Carabid people at the UAIC. I hope they come up with something

UAIC
has one specimen that looks just like these, but it's called schaefferi, and Peter says those should have all black elytra

A. unicolor Schaeffer (replacement name A. schaefferi Liebke)
is described as "black without spots" on page 395 of the original description. The replacement name "A. schaefferi Liebke" is explained in Bousquet & Larochelle (1993): p264.

wonderful; thanks, Peter
hope Margarethe checks her specimen against ref. collection

I'll ad a specimen photo
