Water Penny - Psephenus herricki
Seneca Rocks, Pendleton County, West Virginia, USA
June 20, 2006
Size: 5.8 mm
Here's our first larva in this family, to join Tom's lone adult specimen in the family.

Crawling on rocks in a shallow, fast-flowing mountain river.

Psephenus herricki
You posted a photo of the larva of this same species some time ago!

Wow! Cool critter!
How did you identify it? Looks like a jelly-pillbug. :)

As I start
As I start to take some aquatic pictures I am using the Golden Guide to Pond Life as my guide, and so I was alerted in advance that there was something called a Water Penny and had seen its picture.

Only when I went back to GGPL did I discover the Water Penny is a beetle, and then found Tom's cool picture of an adult here at BugGuide!

You're right, this one was definitely jelly-like, and keeping down the glare was the main challenge.
