Pallid-winged Grasshopper - Trimerotropis pallidipennis - female

Pallid-winged Grasshopper - Trimerotropis pallidipennis - Female
South Mountain Park/Preserve, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
June 14, 2006
Size: 30 mm
This grasshopper was one of the few insects out, and holding fairly still, on a pleasantly warm (101 F) mid-day south of Phoenix. (There were butterflies about, but they all zoomed by at high speed.) This grasshopper flushed up from a shrub and landed on a very hot trail for a moment, where it did a neat "hot foot" act, shifting from one set of feet to the other, holding the overheated ones in the air. At that point, I could see the yellow femora clearly. It then retreated to under a shrub, where it allowed close approach, but the femora were hidden. Size is estimated.

Identification from Capinera (1) and other images in the guide.
