Semioscopis mcdunnoughi

Semioscopis mcdunnoughi
Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
March 26, 2011
Thanks to Greg Pohl for identification. One of 4 specimens sent to him for dissection. All were confirmed as S. mcdunnoughi. Greg notes that the species was originally described from 1941 and has not been seen since. It was known only from the original 3 specimens used for the species description - from Bellingham and the Vancouver, BC area. He suggests that they may not be uncomon in the right place, but because they are small and drab and require dissection to ID, they get overlooked.

Need new species page for this and next post.

Wonderful photos and great addition to Bug Guide and Moth Photographers Group!

Yes,
we were pretty excited when we heard back from Greg. Thought it would be something much more mundane!
