what a monster
female Hogna carolinensis is the only thing I can think of. ID based on sheer size.

Thanks
Thanks, I guess the verdict is in and wolf spider it is. I looked it up and seems harmless, I brought it out to a field and relocated it, thanks for the replies.

Next time
if you can take some ventral images that could help us ID it. Putting the spider in a plastic bag makes it easy to get the ventral shot.

Ventral
plastic bag is a good idea for a ventral shot, i wasnt about to try to get him to roll over but i could do the plastic bag, thanks.

so what is your opinion on ID
Hogna carolinensis? If not a Hogna , then Geolycosa?

Geolycosa
I did think about that genus, but I'm not sure they get that big. I'd guess H. carolinensis is likely correct based on size and coloring, but I'm not 100% sure about H. coloradensis.

Edit - it looks like Geolycosa get to about 22 mm.

yes
certain species of Geolycosa rival H. carolinensis. I have collected large Geo's in Michigan. H. coloradensis is another good candidate, if we had that ventral shot!

that looks very much like a w
that looks very much like a wolf spider.

I agree
Lycosidae (Wolf Spiders), but I'm not sure which one.
