Photographs possible because cold weather slowed it down.
Metalic thorax is about 3.3 mm. From eye to eye is about 3 mm

Standard size
Commonly used sizes for flies are wing length and body length, i.e. head+thorax+abdomen exclusive of antennae.

 
okay, thanks--
not sure dipterists use such a measurement routinely, do they? [although i completely agree that the measurements of hard parts, such as thorax or head, are more reliable than body length that includes the abdomen which may extend/contract]
size data may only help identification if they reflect the parameters conventionally used in reference literature.
now you have to edit every submission form of the series to avoid confusion :/
suggest leaving the size field blank: the measurement is an estimate anyway
