This looks like a good match for
Wagner's image of Large Paectes, Paectes abrostoloides, page 376. It sounds in the text as though there are some similar Paectes. Location and food plant may help you decide. Some feed on Sweet Gum, some on sumac, some on poison ivy. We're hoping this is the bark of a sweet gum, so we're suggesting abrostoloides. One image in the guide at

Yes, it sure was Sweetgum. You're pretty good at this stuff. I guess having Wagner's book really helps. ;)
