Tiny Black Fly - Minettia

Tiny Black Fly - Minettia
Chicago, Illinois, USA
June 16, 2006
Unremarkable black fly except those eyes, which really stand out. On the edge of a sassafras leaf.

Moved
Moved from Minettia.

Minettia (Frendelia) sp.
A species of Minettia (subgenus Frendelia) - Lauxaniidae.

Minettia (Minettia)?
The abdomen looks yellow to me. Isn't Frendelia composed of species with black thorax and abdomen?

I thought so too at first, but check the other photos...
If you check the other examples (I'm looking at the list from IL right now) you can see that the golden color of the wings obscures the coloring of the abdomen and makes it appear as though they're all yellow. The left edge (where there's just one wing) looks like it is probably black underneath.
