Northern Apple Sphinx - Sphinx poecila
Picking Sphinx chersis from Sphinx poecila is easy, but the really problem is separating Sphinx poecila from Sphinx gordius. For years everyone knew about Sphinx gordius. Then suddenly Sphinx gordius, form "poecila" became a species. I missed it phoenix rise to species. Someone must have written a paper stating the necessary prove, but who...well I do not know.
Last night as I was viewing the photos of moths in this site, I saw a photo of Sphinx gordius or was it Sphinx poecila? The photo seemed to be same photo as the left one here now. It was ID as Sphinx gordius last nite. Now it is ID as Sphinx poecila tonight. Well, maybe I am wrong and they are two different photos and both are ID correctly.

It looks very close to what you said, but it has two white or silver dots on its wings
