are these caterpillars
Is the host plant a morning glory? Definitely cassidine larvae and not caterpillars. The act of placing feces over the back and living gregariously is pretty typical for tortoise beetles.

. After moving to Cassidini I viewed other tortoise beetle larva images and decided these looked different enough in shape and features that they cannot yet be IDed to that tribe or subfamily. Eric knew what he was doing in leaving them at family level :-)
