Craspedolepta nebulosa kincaidi, but note:
There is a large series of conspecific psyllids from Canada at BOLD, such as for example
this one
, collected from Fireweed, identified as
Craspedolepta subpunctata
. I am fairly convinced that these are, however, all misidentified.
Craspedolepta subpunctata
is a greenish species with unmarked wings (
example
) while
Craspedolepta nebulosa kincaidi
is yellowish with dark markings apically as in your psyllid (
example
, but note this is the nominate subspecies and not kincaidi). Additionally, the female genitalia of both species are quite different; when looking at this character alone it's fairly easy to see that the BOLD specimens are definitely not
subpunctata
. Refer to
The Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects
P. 30, figs 74 and 77 (
available online here
) for a side-by-side comparison of the genitalia of the two species, then compare for example
this specimen on BOLD
and it's quite easy to determine it's a
nebulosa
in
subpunctata
's clothing.
I am unsure of how this error came to be. Both of these species occur on Fireweed in northern North America, often on the same plants (
see this paper
); that may have been a factor. Either way, none of this really matters to you or your psyllid, which is
Craspedolepta nebulosa kincaidi
. But this comment is meant to serve as a warning to those who wish to use comparison to BOLD images to make an ID in this species group.
