Calligrapha-like Beetle - Leptinotarsa collinsi

Calligrapha-like Beetle - Leptinotarsa collinsi
San Pedro River Valley, SE of San Manuel, Pinal County, Arizona, USA
August 11, 2011
Size: approx 7 mm
I would guess this is possibly a Zygogramma tortuosa, although it does not match other photos on BG exactly; on a Jumping Cholla Cactus, Sonoran desert with Saguaros, Palo verdes and Jumping Chollas, Elev 2800 feet

Calligrapha collinsi
Although originally named as a species of Leptinotarsa this species actually belongs in the genus Calligrapha. The host plant was listed by Wilcox as Arizona poppy but I have swept that plant to death and have never found a specimen on it. Because it mimics Zygogramma I suspect it will eventually be found on a composite. Numerous species of Calligrapha, especially in the Bidentisoma subgenus, utilize composites. I am now concentrating on Ambrosia as a potential host.

Wow, you found one!
It's Leptinotarsa collinsi, John Watts had one from the San Rafael Valley this summer, and I photographed one in the UAIC - great!

ID confirmed by S.M. Clark: "Leptinotarsa collinsi is correct.
"...This is a really neat species!"

I just got one from Sonora, Mexico
which of course I cannot show here even though it was only 30 mi south of Nogales. Grr
