Amplification on the color issue
"The summer brood is easily distinguished from the spring generation by the tan and yellowish coloration; (earlier broods have a white appearance)."

From Orsak, L. J. (1977). The Butterflies of Orange County, California. Center for Pathobiology Miscellaneous Publication #3. University of California Press, New York

Glad you're mentioning the difference
between spring and summer generations. There seems to be disagreement on taxonomic placement, though. Peter Bryant/MAMBA follows Orsak in naming this (incl. your own photos) C. california california , in line with Emmel (1). Art Shapiro's site lists it as a ssp. of C. tullia : butterfly.ucdavis. I'll send you some more information per e-mail - haven't completely sorted it out yet.
