Schistocerca obscura (Fabricius) Obscure Bird Grasshopper? - Schistocerca alutacea - Female
Micco, Brevard County, Florida, USA
November 24, 2011
Size: 4-5 inches in length
Found this bug at 8:30 yesterday morning (11/24/2011), feasting on the broad leaf of my Hawaiian Sunset Vine. Lots of damage overnight. It's about 4-5 inches long, at least. It flew into my face and then dropped to the lawn about 6 feet behind me. Any ideas about how to get this bug to stop eating my prized plant would be greatly appreciated. A confirmation of my guess about what this bug is or a correction would also be appreciated. Thank you.

She may be Shistocerca obscura; or,
if the color in the photo is accurate, she is more likely S. alutacea. Sometimes the two are difficult to tell apart, but the weak markings on the hind legs and the brownish color are more in keeping with S. alutacea. They often seem a lot larger than they really are. The largest these get is less than 3 inches, but that still comes across as pretty darn big when one flies up. As for keeping it off your plants - it will go to plants it likes, and short of killing it, there are no guarantees; however, if you scared her away, odds are she'll go to another plant closer to where she flew. Unless your plant is small, her eating will probably do little harm other than aesthetic. She's probably nearing the end of her life anyway.
