Likely Subgenus Geron - Geron - female

Likely Subgenus Geron - Geron - Female
Near Santa Ynez Peak, Los Padres National Forest, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
August 10, 2007
Found in open area within a mile or so north of Santa Ynez Peak, visiting flowers of what I believe is Allophyllum glutinosum (a close relative to genus Gilia in the Phlox family, Polemoniaceae).

I'm pretty sure this is in genus Geron...the key in Hull(1) goes there, and the generic description fits quite well. If so, it's in subgenus Geron (vs. subgenus Empidigeron), due to the relative shortness of vein R5 to preceding segment (i.e. "fused portion R4+R5").

This is a female, from the separated eyes. Male Geron have holoptic eyes (contiguous along middle of face from vertex down to antenna).
