Woody, integral gall on twig of Gambel's Oak (Quercus gambelii) in oak brush/dry prairie vegetation in foothills of Wasatch Mountains (elevation ~5000'). See next photo for dissected view and larva.

Looks like a moth larva, but I'd bet it's a cynipid gall. Looks like there's a tiny hole in the gall in this shot, so maybe the caterpillar moved in after it was abandoned.
