This is a closeup view of the linked beetle's ventral abdomen showing a cluster of three mites with overlapping pedicels:



The pedicel of a fourth mite, which I broke off for detailed imaging, can be seen too. This (isolated) cluster can be seen on the left side of ventral abdomen in the linked image.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 135 images with a 5.6 micron step taken with a Nikon CFI60 Plan Achromat 10X 0.25NA microscope objective + Nikon 300mm F4 telephoto lens + Nikon D300 camera (magnification 15X; technique described here).
