Cecidomyiidae, gall on wild 4 o'clocks - Neolasioptera allioniae

Cecidomyiidae, gall on wild 4 o'clocks - Neolasioptera allioniae
Ames - Tullamore, Story County, Iowa, USA

August 31, 2011: collected a stem gall on Mirabilis nyctaginea, wild 4 o'clocks
Although these plants have been growing in my yard for about 12 years, this was the first year I've seen these galls. Quite lovely. However I think I picked them too early as they are now shriveled. I will hold on to them through spring, just in case. (I was going to collect another gall to open for a larva photo but .. it was a good intention.)

April 2012: adult flies (but mostly parasitoid wasps) began emerging and continued on into May

Raymond Gagne's red book, [n]The Plant-Feeding Gall Midges of North America[/u], page 229, lists a Mirabilisstem gall as Neolasioptera sp.
R Gagné determined: Neolasioptera allioniae (Felt)
Specimens deposited NMNH.

Batch rearing.
