Short-horned Grasshoppers (Acrididae) - Melanoplus femurrubrum

Short-horned Grasshoppers (Acrididae) - Melanoplus femurrubrum
Purdue, Indiana, USA

On soybean.

Moved from Melanoplus.

Melanoplus femurrubrum
Definitely looks like this species. The large triangular cerci and the shape of the subgenital plate both look correct, as does the coloration.

Male Redlegged?
The redlegged grasshopper (Melanoplus femurrubrum) would be my first best guess, followed by a migratory grasshopper with redder-than-usual hindlegs (Melanoplus sanguinipes)...something in the Melanoplus genus, I think. Whatever he is, he sure looks to be a 'hairy' little fellow, doesn't he? Really nice, detailed shot, to show that...
