120811Spider - Theridiosoma

120811Spider - Theridiosoma
Hillsborough County, Florida, USA
December 8, 2011
Size: 1mm
This spider was hanging from a strand outside. Photo is not great, but thought that the shape might tell something about it.

Moved to Theridiosoma
Moved from Entelegynes . Yes I can see the hairs now too. That seems like a reasonable ID to me.

cf. Theridiosoma
Ooh, I think see something. In the 2nd pic, it looks like there's two really long trichobothria (long, thin hairs) on the 3rd & 4th tibiae, which should mean it could be a Theridiosoma... but Florida has two species, so not sure which one. Here's the county records for each species (from GB Edwards); T. gemmosum: Alachua, Calhoun, Highlands, Liberty, Orange, & Seminole. For T. savannum: Alachua & Hernando. So I don't think we can narrow it based on location, seems like either species would be possible in Hillsborough County.

Thank you Mandy.
You have better eyes than I do. Of course, they are quite a bit younger!

Moved
Moved from Spiders.

juvenile male
At 1 mm with enlarged palps we should be able to narrow this down somewhat. I wonder if it could be a juvenile male Mysmenidae.

That would seem possible.
According to the comments of Rod Crawford on one of the BG photos, the abdomen is at least somewhat diagnostic. The mottling, without any real pattern, seems also to match up.
