Forum Topics

On each user page - images & guide pages contributed are linked - how about Forum topics? Also, maybe I'm not doing it correctly - is there a way to search forum topics? Keyword, etc? Normal search doesn't seem to bring these up. On more than one occassion I've tried to find an old topic or wanted to make sure I wasn't rehashing some old comment.

I'd like to see all discussion of each species
As a relatively new user, I get frustrated trying to find info on a specific species. The "Info" pages have the bare bones info, but one can find more DETAILED AND HELPFUL INFO among the comments/discussions made by users/contributors. So, let me try to phrase my question in two ways:

Is the only way to find ALL the discussion about a particular "bug" by navigating to every single image of the "bug" where comments are posted below each photo, or, is there a MAIN discussion page for each species of "bug"?

For example, I want to see all the discussions about Polygonia interrogationis. Do I have to click on each and every image of this species in order to read other users' contributing info about the species? There are over 300 images. :-O

What am I doing wrong? Please help. THANKS!

Info pages
We, editors, try to include any useful info we can find on the info pages. That includes comments from discussions under posted images. You realize that we cannot catch them all. So, you can help us. When you find something useful, not just in comments but also elsewhere, you can let us know by posting the pertinent link on the "Guide page improvements" forum. Thanks in advance.
Also, it may be useful to you if you click on "Recent images" after you get to the "Images" pages. The listing is a little different. You can see which ones have comments and which don't. It saves a little time.

Thanks, I sure appreciate your suggestions. This is such a helpful site---- it looks like MUCH labor goes into it!

You're not doing anything wrong :)
The comments are attached to the images, and the only way to see all of them is to view all the pics. Unfortunately, there is no "discussion page" for each species. Perhaps the eagerly anticipated BugGuide 2.0 will include features that will make it easier to find this kind of information.

Topic: Forum Topics
You're not missing anything- forum topics aren't part of the search. As far as I know, there's no serious technical barrier, since forum topics are nodes just like guide pages and image pages. I think it's just a matter of the search function having been implemented before the forums existed.

The only workaround is to use Google with and include some phrase found on forum pages but not on other pages:

an example

There is a way . . .
if you use a word or phrase that appears in the post you want. To demonstrate, I looked at Chuck's post and then typed "function having been implemented" (without the quotes) in the search box. It brought me to this page.

The search function works only with words, not with ideas, so you have to try words that are likely to be in the discussion you're looking for. It's most useful when you remember a phrase in a topic you've seen before and can't find.

Not quite
That only works if you search on a comment- not on the main post. Also, if your search includes a very common word, your search will max out and give you a blank page

Searching by key words:
Curious, my own test search using "function having been implemented" did indeed bring me to this page. There is nothing in those four words that matches anything in the subject lines of the various posts on this particular page. So I was amazed that our BugGuide word search is capable of looking beyond just subject lines by testing the complete text portions of posts.

that phrase "function .." was from the body of Chucks reply above. It worked for me as well, but I tried other searches using text from other topics without success.

Topics really are excluded
Comments- whether on images or on forum topics- are included. It's the original post that's excluded

ok, really odd
I tried again with some random topics and it seems to work - never would have guessed.

...great tip. Thanks.

Can't take credit...
Just passing along what I learned from others
