Raspberry Pyrausta Moth - Pyrausta signatalis

Raspberry Pyrausta Moth - Pyrausta signatalis
Lily Lake / Campton Township, Kane County, Illinois, USA
June 26, 2006
Size: 3/8 inch snout to wingtip
Came into my kitchen assuming it was attracted to the light. Very flighty and not a strong flier. Only flew a few feet at a time when disturbed. ID based on website photos at Bug Guide and "Moth Photographers Group", as well as positive ID by Bob Patterson of Bob's Entomology Hobby in Maryland. Though a number of members of this subfamily (Pyrausta) are considered crop pests, the larval form of this one feeds on mint plants and bee balms. I planted fuschia colored bee balm 2 years ago and they are now flourishing, which apparently is why this moth is now in this vicinity. Cool!
