Giant Stag Beetle - Lucanus elaphus - male

Giant Stag Beetle - Lucanus elaphus - Male
Carmi, White County, Illinois, USA
June 16, 2006
Brought to me be a friend. Found by the light outside the state police station. Cooled and posed. Before the condensation had cleared he was moving so fast I couldn't get a sharp image! What a guy.

Nice..
Steve,

Nice shot and a nice find. I've had luck just blowing on them and they will usually rear up and stay completely still for a while.

Steven

Pneumophobia!
In humans that is a definitive symptom of rabies! I'll have to remember its also useful in beetles. :)
