Euchlaena effecta

Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

Size: 1.5 inches
This moth was found near the foot of the vinyl siding within our sheltered front door, early evening. Is it possibly a dark scallop moth?

I mentioned that I had photographed 2 more individuals of this moth in 2007, at the same location as the 2006 image. Here they are.

They both look good for
effecta
. Since they're separate individuals, I'll unlink them, but they are great additions to the Guide for this species.

This was identified by an expert at the Moth Photographers Group as:
6726/25 -- Obtuse Euchlaena Moth
E. obtusaria/muzaria form muzaria
This year (2007) I had 2 more, which I was able to photograph.

Not obtusaria
I'm not sure who ID'd you're photo at MPG, but I requested the help of a couple of experts, particularly from the
CNC
, and this moth is definitely not
obtusaria
. Also,
muzaria
is a separate species from
obtusaria
rather than a ssp or form (see notes on
muzaria
info page
).
After corresponding with the experts, our consensus is that this photo is of an
E. effecta
. According to the Geometrid expert at the CNC, he said, "...
your pic is a much better match for effecta; the PM line is more jagged and the AM and PM are more nearly parallel than in obtusaria/muzaria, where these diverge strongly at the costa.
"
New
species page
has been created, and the good news is that this is the first identified
E. effecta
for the Guide.

Saw-wing?
Reminds me of a Saw-wing, but I am by no means a moth expert.
