Philonthus jurgans Tottenham ?
It's clear, as Adam points out, that this is not Philonthus lomatus Erichson which has six punctures in each dorsal row of the pronotum. Of the five-puncture species, the best match, in my estimation, is the solid dark Philonthus jurgans Tottenham (5.5-7.6 mm - in the right size range). There are various reasons to exclude all of the other five-puncture species that I checked. Nonetheless, it's very difficult to identify Philonthus spp. without having the specimen in hand.

This is too dark for lomatus
This is too dark for lomatus but I count 5 punctures in each dorsal row so it must be a different group of species. Hard to tell from the photos.
