Cluster of Blue Oat mites on pool of water (Penthaleus major) - Penthaleus major

Cluster of Blue Oat mites on pool of water (Penthaleus major) - Penthaleus major
Near Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA
December 22, 2011
This was a cluster of blue oat mites we found floating on a pool of water. There was one similar the day before, and two more the day this picture was taken.

Wow! :^)
A pool party.

Another mite pool party today
Third day in a row with a cluster of these. We're wondering how they got in that water - it's small plastic pool, sitting on our patio. I think I saw a few light orange egg-case type things floating in the mass. They could have come off leaves or grass or maybe they hitched a ride on the wild rabbit that frequents the lawn.
We also saw some floating in a ditch out in the country.
