Not always reliable
If the system clock on the camera is incorrect, then the EXIF dates will be, too. Also, checking the EXIF data can be time-consuming if your browser doesn't have the capability to access it.

The date for this image, according to the EXIF data, is February 2, 2010- at 8:56 in the evening.

I use a free photo manipulation program called Irfanview which makes it very easy to check the EXIF data. Just click "Image" and then "Information" which brings up the EXIF tab for the photo. As you mentioned, though, if the camera is not set up correctly, the data will be wrong.
