Are you sure its not a tomato
Are you sure its not a tomato horn worm?

Definitely a tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta.

 
Are they not host specific? I
Are they not host specific? I'm up in Washington so we only ever had the tomato variety and I dont know much about the tobacco horn worms.

 
Not that specific
Tomatoes and tobacco are fairly closely related, and many insects feed on both.

Besides, expecting common names to be precise is expecting too much
